What is NPI - New Product Introduction - done for?

The implementation of new products or services on the consumer market is a very complex procedure, which consists of a number of complex activities. The main goal is to create a product or its improvement that meets the expectations of consumers. New Product Introduction is a procedure used by leading manufacturers as well as service providers focusing on continuous development and striving for the highest quality in the company’s policy.

Basic assumptions of the new product introduction procedure

The procedure covers all phases of a product introduction: from the initial design, through checking prototypes and analyzing correct mass production, to obtaining the necessary certificates allowing the product to enter the market.

NPI procedures are also used by companies operating in the EMS industry when implementing a new article into production or after applying a change to an already produced one. In practice, this is one procedure based on the implementation of subsequent steps leading to the production of the target product. The NPI procedure depends on each company's internal policy. It may happen that in large corporations, this process is slightly different in various production departments.

Six phases of New Product Introduction

NPI is an extremely complex procedure, based on which several separate models and diagrams were formulated. The most popular is the model, which assumes the implementation of a new product in subsequent stages:
1. Define
2. Carryout
3. Validate
4. Implement
5. Assess
Based on the above model, we can more easily understand the assumption of the NPI procedure, which implements a new product or service step by step. Each stage is based on specialized analytical tools that allow you to eliminate further obstacles and possible errors that will appear in the production process. As we have already said, this is one of the most popular models used by manufacturers. Nevertheless, we can come across slightly modified schemes in which subsequent stages are seen as separate.

What benefits does the NPI procedure offer?

From the manufacturer's perspective, NPI allows you to create a product without flaws. It is focused on the needs of various market segments. NPI through effective elimination of errors and obstacles significantly reduces production costs and allows for much faster product implementation. Advanced control tools also allow you to speed up the production process, and thus, the implementation of a new product is associated with higher profits.

From the customers' perspective, producers who follow the New Product Introduction procedure are perceived as more credible and reliable. The recipient may assume that a well-carried NPI process leads to the production of an item or service of the highest quality and adapted to the requirements.
