What are the cable harness tests for?

Sensitive cable harnesses can at any time succumb to minor faults that endanger the main electronic equipment. This applies primarily to power harnesses that transport high voltage current. Cable harness tests, which are able to detect even the smallest irregularities in the circuits, are used to avoid such situations. How are such tests performed and what benefits can they offer us?

What is needed to perform the test?

A cable harness tester is of course indispensable. It is a simple device equipped with numerous sockets that allow you to check different types of cables and connectors. The tester has its own source of electric current, a voltmeter and a matrix for connecting subsequent sections of the cable. In addition, the controller informs us about the result of the tests. Modern cable harness testers are compatible with popular operating systems, thanks to which it is possible to use advanced diagnostic software.

What information does the cable harness tester provide us with?

The tester is a simple device that provides us with professional diagnostics of cable harnesses. It is able to detect numerous irregularities and notify us about it with an appropriate message. The tester detects an interruption of the connection in the beam, informs about an open circuit, detects unintended connections, i.e. short circuits, as well as the appearance of short circuits that are accidental and unintended by the manufacturer. In the past, such tests had to be performed manually, which resulted in  a massive waste of time. Today, a simple device carries out complex processes for us.

How are cable harness tests performed?

We can mention three basic tests performed by the device: continuity test, low voltage test and high voltage test. The course of such tests is as follows:

Continuity test - current sent from section A to section B. If the current easily reaches the destination point, then we can be sure that the connection is continuous.

Low voltage test - the device gives low power current between two conductors which by definition should not connect. No current flow means efficient insulation, while its flow - a short circuit.

High-voltage test - an analogous test, except that this time high voltage current is used. It allows you to detect places that are most exposed to a short circuit in the near future.

Cable harness tests are being improved, which affects their effectiveness and increases their capabilities. As a result, an increasing number of manufacturers use testers to check the quality of their product. The devices are also used by specialists in diagnostics.

What are the benefits of the cable harness test?

Irregularities in the structure of cable harnesses pose a great risk to connected electronic equipment. They shorten its service life and also increase the risk of a serious failure. Cable harness tests allow you to safely check the correct operation of cables and wires without jeopardising expensive and sensitive electronic devices.
